Scarves in Storytimes

I regularly use a set of multi-coloured chiffon scarves in our Baby Rhymetimes, and our visiting babies love them!

The following rhymes are tried and tested with this age group (0 to 18 months). I'll be adding rhymes to use with the older group in time.

Scarf Rhymes and Activities for babies

Hiding Rhyme
(inspired by 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, Eric Carle)
Looking through a [colour] scarf, and who do I see?
I see [baby's name], looking at me!

One Bright scarf
(adapted from 10 Little Fingers at Storytime Rocks)
One bright scarf waiting for the wind to blow (hold in hand)
Wiggle it high (wiggle scarf above head)
Wiggle it low (wiggle scarf by knees)
Shake it fast (wiggle scarf quickly)
Shake it slow (wiggle scarf slowly)
Put it behind your back
Where did it go? (bring out empty hands)

Scarves all around
(adapted from a Rhyme posted at Perpetual Pre-school back in 2000)
Up and down, round and round (draw circles in the air),
Put your scarf on the ground.
Over (wave scarf above lap) under, (below legs) in between (wave scarf between knees)
Now my scarf can not be seen (close knees).
Scarf in front, scarf behind, now my scarf I cannot find.
It’s in my left hand, in my right,
My lovely scarf is back in sight (wriggle scarf).

Where is Baby?
(to the tune of “Friere Jacques")
Where is [baby's name],
Where is [baby's name],
There he/she is,
There he/she is,
We're so glad to see you,
We're so glad to see you,
Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo!
(place the scarf on baby's head and face for the last line and remove gently,
if baby likes it, repeat and remove with a flourish and a giggle).

There’s a Scarf
(to the tune of  “There's a spider on the floor”)
There’s a scarf on my head, on my head.
There’s a scarf on my head, on my head.
There’s a scarf on my head, there’s a scarf on my head,
There’s a scarf on my head, on my head.
(continue with knees, toes, tummy etc.)

Roley Poley
(rhyme from Mission Bay Library)
Roley poley, roley poley,
Up and down, up and down,
Roley roley poley,
Roley roley poley,
Up and down, up and down.
(Hold ends of scarf in both hands and and make bicycle movements to the 'roley, poley' bits)

I've posted a baby rhymetime that features scarves and more ideas on how to incorporate scarves into rhymetimes and storytimes.
More rhymes to use with scarves will be added as I come across them ... so do check back.
Meanwhile, I'd be happy for you to leave comments linking to any sources that you find.
